Humanities

The Division of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies is the home of the arts at Thomas University. The faculty consists of a group of talented and diverse members whose strengths in their respective disciplines allow them to serve both Thomas University as well as the community of Thomasville and the surrounding areas. Our faculty are not only active in the teaching of their discipline; they also engage in the applied practice of their discipline.

Community outreach is exemplified by Arts for the Community (ACTU), whose mission is to combine the gifts and energies of Thomas University personnel and students with those of community members to provide excellent arts events for the community. ACTU events include:

  • Sundays at Four, a monthly concert series;
  • Fridays a Noon, a bimonthly lunch concert featuring regional and national performing artists;
  • the Thomasville Singers, a community chorus;
  • the TU Book Club, with monthly meetings held on our campus or in the community;
  • Art exhibitions;
  • the Creative Writing Club and its annual publication NIGHT HAWK REVIEW, showcasing art, photography, poetry, fiction and essays from the Thomas University community and beyond; and
  • annual Theatre productions.

Students from all majors can participate in fine arts activities.  In addition to those listed above, TU offers students the opportunity to participate in:

Students pursing the Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities have the opportunity to concentrate their studies in Art, English, Music or Film while also gaining experience in the other disciplines.

Humanities majors choose a concentration in Art, English, Music or Film consisting of 15 credit hours. In addition, they take 9 credit hours in each of the other core Humanities areas of art, English and music, except for the film concentration, which only requires 6 credit hours in each of the core Humanities.

The degree requires 12 hours of foreign language courses, with release for one elective option per year of high school foreign language credit. All majors must take lower-division Humanities courses and the Senior Thesis.

Open electives in the upper division of 18 hours can be selected to achieve a minor in various disciplines or to continue advanced study in the concentration area. CIP Code 24.0103
The major in Interdisciplinary Studies program is a flexible course of study that explores the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences and leads to the completion of a Bachelor of Science. It is an ideal program for students who want to design much of their program of study, and for transfer students because it allows for the majority of transfer credits to be applied toward the degree.

The IDS degree requires an Interdisciplinary Core of 21 credit hours, in addition to a focus of study that must include at least five courses and 15 credit hours with the same prefix, or an approved minor, and the Senior Thesis.

Open electives of 21 hours can be selected to achieve a minor in various disciplines or to continue advanced study in the focus of study area. The IDS degree provides students an opportunity to pursue a wide range of intellectual interests through largely self-determined areas of study.
